And just like that my week without Netflix has come to an end. And let me tell you, it felt amazing.
For those of you who have not read my previous blog post, for the last week I have been on a television detox. I realised one evening, as I sat in nothing but my towel watching re-runs of The Big Bang Theory, that I was becoming far too dependant on television as a way to relax. I had become unable to concentrate without a show going in the background, which was rather ironic since it hindered more than helped.
And so, finding myself behind in my university work and part way through NaNoWriMo, I decided it was about time I give up TV cold turkey for a week.
I loved it.
Honestly, I thought I would find myself lost with far too much time on my hands. I had expected to feel more of a sense of loss than I did. The only time I felt any sort of missing watching shows at all was when I was sat in my room eating quietly. Besides those awkward lunch dates alone, which if I’m honest don’t last long since I inhale my food anyway, I didn’t miss Netflix at all. I even found a good compromise to comfort me in those awkward moments via TED Talks. Education and inspiring, I used those few minutes to add something of value to my day.
This week has been a huge eyeopener for me, and going forward I want to limit how much time I give to watching shows, if at all. There are so many wonderful things I could be dedicating my time too, and I intend to explore them all.
Could you give up your one vice for a week? Let me know in the comment section below.
