Description

This Chili Cheese Dog Casserole combines the classic flavors of a chili cheese dog in a hearty, crowd-pleasing casserole. With layers of savory hot dogs, rich chili, gooey melted cheddar cheese, and a golden crescent roll crust, this dish is perfect for weeknight dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

2 packages (8 oz each) hot dogs, sliced
1 can (15 oz) chili (with or without beans)
1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup diced onion (optional)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
Cooking spray

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Prepare the Hot Dogs:
In a large bowl, combine the sliced hot dogs, chili, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. If you’re using onion, add it to the mixture for extra flavor.
Unroll the crescent roll dough and press it into the bottom of the prepared baking dish, ensuring it covers the entire base. Pour the hot dog and chili mixture evenly over the crescent roll layer. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crescent roll dough is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Allow the Chili Cheese Dog Casserole to cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy this hearty, cheesy dish!

Notes

  • Hot Dog Options: Feel free to use your preferred type of hot dogs, such as beef, turkey, or plant-based varieties, to suit your taste or dietary preferences.
  • Canned Chili Tips: Choose chili with or without beans, depending on your texture preference. For added flavor, you can mix a bit of hot sauce or extra spices directly into the chili.
  • Crescent Roll Crust Alternatives: If crescent rolls aren’t available, try puff pastry or biscuit dough for a slightly different texture. Homemade crescent dough also works well if you prefer a scratch-made option.
  • Storage and Reheating: This casserole keeps well in the fridge for up to three days and can be reheated in the oven at 350°F for the best texture.
  • Serving Suggestions: Pair with a fresh side salad, fries, or coleslaw to balance the rich flavors. Top with garnishes like green onions, sour cream, or jalapeños for extra flavor and texture.
