  • Author: Naomi
  • Total Time: 30 min

Description

Tender cabbage sautéed with crispy bacon and onions, seasoned to perfection. It’s the perfect comfort side dish or a light main course all on its own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices bacon, chopped

  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped

  • 1 small head green cabbage (about 6 cups), cored and chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (optional, for tang)

  • 1 tbsp butter (optional, for richness)

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the bacon:
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the bacon fat in the pan.

2️⃣ Sauté onions and garlic:
Add chopped onions to the pan with bacon grease. Cook until translucent, about 4–5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook another 30 seconds.

3️⃣ Add the cabbage:
Add chopped cabbage to the skillet. Toss to coat in the bacon fat and onion mixture. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes, or until cabbage is tender and lightly browned.

4️⃣ Season:
Stir in paprika, salt, and pepper to taste. Add cooked bacon back into the pan. If desired, stir in apple cider vinegar and a pat of butter for added depth.

5️⃣ Serve hot:
Enjoy as a side dish or over rice or mashed potatoes for a full meal.

Notes

  • Low-carb: This dish is keto-friendly and great for low-carb meals.

  • Flavor tip: Add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes for heat or a splash of chicken broth for extra richness.

  • Make it a meal: Stir in sliced smoked sausage or diced cooked potatoes for a heartier version.
