Description

This Fried Cabbage with Shrimp & Sausage combines tender, pan-fried cabbage with smoky sausage and succulent shrimp, all seasoned with a blend of savory spices. It’s an easy-to-make dish that’s packed with protein, vegetables, and bold flavors—ideal for a one-pan dinner!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 lb smoked sausage (or andouille sausage), sliced

  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined

  • 1 small head of cabbage, shredded (about 45 cups)

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or butter)

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (optional, for added umami)

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional, for a touch of acidity)

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Sausage:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil (or butter) in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Add the sliced sausage and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and crispy. Once cooked, remove the sausage from the skillet and set it aside.

2️⃣ Sauté the Vegetables:

  • In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3 minutes until softened.

  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.

3️⃣ Fry the Cabbage:

  • Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet, stirring well to combine with the onions and garlic. Season with smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.

  • Cook the cabbage over medium-high heat for 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage becomes tender and slightly caramelized. If you like your cabbage a bit crispier, cook it for a few extra minutes.

4️⃣ Cook the Shrimp:

  • Push the cabbage to the sides of the skillet, making room in the center. Add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until the shrimp turns pink and opaque. Season the shrimp with a pinch of salt and pepper.

  • Once the shrimp are cooked, stir everything together to combine the shrimp with the cabbage and sausage.

5️⃣ Add the Finishing Touches:

  • If desired, drizzle the soy sauce and apple cider vinegar over the mixture for added flavor. Stir to combine everything evenly.

  • Add the cooked sausage back to the skillet and mix well to incorporate.

6️⃣ Serve:

  • Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired. Serve the fried cabbage with shrimp and sausage hot, either on its own or with a side of rice or crusty bread.

Notes

  • Sausage Options: Feel free to use your favorite type of sausage. Andouille sausage adds a nice smoky flavor, but any smoked sausage or kielbasa works well.

  • Add Vegetables: For extra flavor and nutrition, you can add bell peppers, carrots, or even some spinach to the cabbage mix.

  • Low-Carb Option: This dish is naturally low-carb, but you can make it even lower-carb by serving it without rice.

  • Make-Ahead: You can make this dish ahead and reheat it. It’s great for leftovers and the flavors get even better the next day.
