KFC-Style Gravy

  • Author: Kouider Walid Bentahar

Description

This KFC-style gravy recipe is a homemade version of the classic fast-food favorite, offering the same creamy texture and savory depth of flavor. Made with a base of butter and flour and enriched by the dual flavors of chicken broth and beef broth, this gravy is the perfect accompaniment to comfort foods like mashed potatoes, fried chicken, or biscuits.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Whisk in the flour to form a roux, cooking for 2-3 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Gradually add the chicken broth, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  • Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking to combine.
  • Stir in the onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and a pinch of salt.
  • Bring the gravy to a simmer, whisking occasionally, and cook for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper, if needed.
  • Serve hot over your favorite dishes.

Notes

  • Make-Ahead Tip: You can make the gravy ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently over low heat, adding a splash of broth to maintain the right consistency.
  • Consistency Adjustments: If the gravy is too thick, whisk in a bit more broth. If it’s too thin, simmer it for an additional minute or two until it thickens.
  • Customizations: Add fresh herbs like thyme or parsley for a herby twist or a dash of cayenne for a spicy kick.
  • Dietary Adjustments: Use plant-based butter and vegetable stock for a vegan version or gluten-free flour to accommodate dietary restrictions.
