Ingredients
For the beef:
- 1 lb (450g) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- Salt to taste
For the stir fry:
- 2 large onions, sliced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/4 cup beef broth or water
- Pepper to taste
- 2 green onions, chopped (optional, for garnish)
To serve:
- Cooked white rice
Instructions
1️⃣ Marinate the beef: In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with cornstarch, a pinch of salt, and 1 teaspoon soy sauce. Mix well and let marinate for 10–15 minutes.
2️⃣ Cook the beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef in a single layer and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
3️⃣ Sauté aromatics and onions: In the same pan, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Stir in the minced garlic, ginger, and sliced onions. Cook for 3–4 minutes until the onions are fragrant and slightly softened.
4️⃣ Add sauces and beef: Return the cooked beef to the pan. Add the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce (if using), sesame oil, and beef broth. Stir everything to coat the beef and onions.
5️⃣ Simmer: Let the mixture cook for another 2–3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and the beef to heat through completely.
6️⃣ Season and garnish: Taste and adjust with salt and pepper as needed. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired.
7️⃣ Serve: Spoon the stir fry over a bed of freshly cooked white rice and enjoy hot.
Notes
-
Beef Cut Tip: Use flank steak or sirloin for tenderness. Slice against the grain for best texture.
-
Marinating Matters: A short marination with cornstarch helps tenderize the beef and creates a silky coating when cooked.
-
Sauce Variations: Hoisin sauce adds sweetness—omit if you prefer a more savory flavor.
-
Stir-Fry Fast: Cook on high heat quickly to retain the beef’s juiciness and onion crunch.
-
Rice Pairing: Best served over freshly steamed jasmine or white rice.
