Homemade Taffy – A Sweet Treat You Can Make at Home!

  • Author: Naomi
  • Total Time: 25 min

Description

This Homemade Taffy is soft, chewy, and customizable in flavor and color. Whether you love fruity, minty, or classic vanilla, pulling your own taffy is a fun kitchen project that’s perfect for family time or gifting homemade candy to friends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

  • 1 cup light corn syrup

  • ¾ cup water

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 tsp flavoring extract (vanilla, peppermint, orange, etc.)

  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

1️⃣ Prep your space: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and butter your hands or a silicone mat (you’ll need this for pulling the taffy). Set aside.

2️⃣ Mix dry ingredients: In a heavy-bottom saucepan, whisk together sugar and cornstarch.

3️⃣ Cook the syrup: Add corn syrup, water, butter, and salt. Stir constantly over medium heat until everything dissolves. Attach a candy thermometer.

4️⃣ Boil: Bring the mixture to a boil and cook without stirring until it reaches 250°F (hard ball stage).

5️⃣ Add flavor and color: Remove from heat and stir in the flavoring and food coloring if desired.

6️⃣ Cool briefly: Pour onto the prepared baking sheet. Let cool just until you can handle it, about 10–15 minutes.

7️⃣ Pull the taffy: With greased hands, pull the taffy by stretching and folding it repeatedly for about 10–15 minutes, until it becomes light and opaque.

8️⃣ Cut and wrap: Roll into ropes, cut into bite-size pieces, and wrap in wax paper squares.

Notes

  • Grease up: Butter your hands well to avoid sticking!

  • Flavor ideas: Try coconut, root beer, or lemon extracts for variety.

  • Storage: Store wrapped pieces in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
