This recipe is ideal for children to participate in, making it a wonderful family activity that results in delicious, shareable treats. Perfect for Halloween parties, school events, or just a fun kitchen project, these Oreo Spiders will quickly become a seasonal favorite.

Ingredients

  • Oreos (1 package): The base of the spider
  • Chocolate chips (¼ cup): Used for melting and adhering the eyes
  • Googly eye candy (1 package): For a fun and spooky look
  • Pretzel rods (1 package): To create the spider legs

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients:
    • Break the pretzel rods into halves or thirds, creating about eight pieces per spider.
    • Melt the chocolate chips using either a double boiler or microwave method.
  • Assemble the Spiders:
    • Place an Oreo on a flat surface.
    • Insert four pretzel rod pieces into the cream filling on each side of the Oreo to form the spider’s legs.
    • Press down gently on the Oreo to secure the pretzel legs.
  • Add the Eyes:
    • Dab a small amount of melted chocolate onto the Oreo where you want the eyes to go.
    • Press the googly eye candy into the melted chocolate, securing them in place.
  • Set the Spiders:
    • Place the assembled spiders in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to set the chocolate.
  • Serve:
    • Once set, remove the spiders from the fridge and serve them as part of a Halloween dessert spread.

Notes

  • Substitutions: You can use different types of sandwich cookies or chocolate based on preference. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free Oreos and pretzels.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or refrigerate for up to two weeks. For longer storage, freeze the spiders for up to three months.
  • Customization: Feel free to get creative with the decorations. Use different candy eyes, licorice for legs, or flavored Oreos to give your spiders unique personalities.
