Description
These slow-cooked “fried” apples are inspired by the beloved Cracker Barrel side dish, delivering all the warmth and spice of the original without the stovetop fuss. Tender, sweet, and cinnamon-scented, they’re perfect as a dessert, breakfast topping, or comforting side.
Ingredients
-
6 large apples (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and sliced
-
½ cup brown sugar
-
¼ cup granulated sugar
-
1 tsp ground cinnamon
-
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
-
¼ tsp salt
-
2 tbsp cornstarch
-
2 tbsp lemon juice
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
¼ cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces
Instructions
1️⃣ Prep the apples: Peel, core, and slice apples into thick wedges. Place them in the slow cooker.
2️⃣ Mix dry ingredients: In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and cornstarch.
3️⃣ Coat the apples: Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples. Toss gently to coat evenly.
4️⃣ Add liquid ingredients: Pour lemon juice and vanilla extract over the apples. Dot the top with butter pieces.
5️⃣ Cook: Cover and cook on low for 3–4 hours, or until apples are tender but not mushy. Stir once halfway through.
6️⃣ Serve warm: Spoon apples into bowls as a side or dessert. They pair beautifully with pork, pancakes, or vanilla ice cream.
